Madeline Wells
Madeline is Trawlwoolway & Plangermaireener (Palawa) and Mutti Mutti, Wadi Wadi, Wemba Wemba, Wotjobaluk (Koorie) living in Lutruwita (Tasmania).
Madeline is a qualified Teachers Aide, and was inspired to work in education from her Mum Adele Wells who worked on the ASSPA program, Grandmother Ollie Ralph who shared her story and culture at UTAS and schools across Lutruwita, and her Dad Scott Wells’s work with Aboriginal Education in Lutruwita. She has worked and volunteered with many organisations, such as Seed Mob, Big Hart, FYA, Future Super, Arts Tasmania, Firesticks Alliance, AFL SportsReady, TasTAFE, Department of Education, The Australia Institute, and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.
In 2016, Madeline won the NAIDOC Tasmanian Aboriginal Young Person of the Year, and was a 2018 Young Leader for Women Deliver. She has represented Australia with Amnesty International twice, once in 2019 part of their Global Youth Task Force, as well as attending a Youth Forum in Switzerland at the United Nations in 2016.
Madeline has spoken at events like these and more, about her experiences as a queer blak woman, advocating for justice, change and truth telling. As well as mentoring and supporting other young people to stand up and speak out about what change they want to see and be part of.
